The Special Envoy of the High Commissioner for Refugees for the Horn of Africa affirmed the commitment of the High Commissioner in providing the necessary technical support to achieve all programs and strategic objectives related to refugee issues and problems
Sudanese Interior Minister Ezz al-Din al-Sheikh met, in Khartoum, on Wednesday, with the Special Envoy of the High Commissioner for UNHCR Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Afi.
The Minister of Interior referred to the role played by Sudan towards refugee camps in accordance with international charters and treaties and according to a national strategy.
He remained committed to these treaties despite the economic and security issues facing communities hosting the refugees; issues which require providing necessary and urgent technical support.
The minister explained that the strategic goal is to register all refugees and issue them foreign numbers.
Especially since their presence inside the cities causes many problems according to the asylum laws.
The Sudanese Minister of Interior called for the provision of a shelter for victims of smuggling and human trafficking who seek to migrate to Europe.
Refugee Situation in Sudan
For his part, the UNHCR Special Envoy praised Sudan’s efforts towards refugees, providing them with an appropriate environment despite the economic crisis the country is going through.
He stressed the keenness and commitment of UNHCR in supporting refugee issues in Sudan, offering technical support to achieve all programs and strategic objectives.
A previous report published by Relief Web last March indicated that the majority of refugees and asylum seekers in Sudan are hosted in the poorest areas.
The host communities in those areas are equally in need of the available but scarce resources.
The same report also stated that by the end of 2021, more than 1.14 million refugees will be living in Sudan.
