A local official pointed to the possibility of deteriorating environmental conditions due to the spread of some diseases and epidemics in a refugee area in Gedaref state.
Khartoum: AlTaghyeer
The torrential rains that hit the “Tenediba” area in Gedaref state have raised fears of the spread of epidemics as a result of the deteriorating health and environmental conditions in the refugee hosting area.
The area includes a center that houses 30,000 Ethiopian refugees, and it belongs to al-Mafaza locality, which has also witnessed massive torrential rains in the past period.
Sudan News Agency reported on Saturday that the village of “al-Tenediba” was severely damaged as a result of heavy rains, a rush of torrential rain, and flooding.
The Executive Director of al-Mafaza locality, Abu Obeida Mustafa, said that volunteer organizations are leading joint efforts to support and shelter those affected.
He pointed out that the deteriorating environmental conditions indicate the possibility of the spread of some diseases and epidemics, as a result of the population density in the area.
Al-Tenediba camp hosts about 30,000 refugees out of a total of more than 65,000 Ethiopian refugees who fled the war in the Tigray border region to Sudan.
The local authorities in Gedaref continued to complain about the lack of financial resources, which made them issue calls from time to time to international organizations to provide aid to the refugees.
