Sudan facing possible lockdown due to COVID-19
The authorities in Sudan are considering a lockdown the country in the event that citizens do not adhere to the COVID-19 health requirements pandemic, especially after the emergence of the new “Omicron” variant in certain regions.

A member of the Sovereign Council, Chairman of the Higher Committee for Health Emergencies, Dr. Abdul-Baqi Abdul Qader al-Zubair, proposed a nationwide lockdown across Sudan in the event that citizens do not comply with the Committee’s and the Security and Defense Council’s COVID-19 directives calling for a commitment to wearing masks in public places and health requirements.
The Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Haitham Muhammad Ibrahim, received Dr. al-Zubair, in the presence of the Director of the General Department of Basic Health Care Dr. Khalil Muhammad Ibrahim and Dr. Al-Fadil Muhammad Mahmoud, Director of the Department of Emergency and Epidemic Control at the Ministry of Health Federal and Director General of Therapeutic Medicine.
Instructions
Abdul Qader directed the Federal Ministry of Health to be fully prepared and prepared to confront the growth and mutation of the Corona virus, stressing that the rapid spread of the Corona virus may lead to the complete closure of the country and that the Supreme Emergency Committee is looking forward to implementing these directives, and demanded government and private agencies to follow the confrontations of the Federal Ministry of Health in order to ensure safety for all.
Abdel-Baqi stressed the need for educational institutions to adhere to the application of health precautions and to work together to address the Corona epidemic, and called on citizens to adhere to health precautions such as distancing, wearing a mask and washing hands, stressing the need to review the readiness of hospitals and attention to medical and health cadres.
Abdel-Qader praised the effective role of the Federal Ministry of Health in managing the Corona crisis and confronting the spread of the virus, calling for the need to work with all parties to ensure the achievement of sustainable development goals.
He stressed that the Sovereign Council, in full cooperation with the Council of Ministers, will provide all assistance to develop health services in the country.
Infections
For his part, the Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Haitham Muhammad Ibrahim, said that the Corona Virus Report No. (549) for suspected and confirmed for Friday indicated that (99) confirmed cases were recorded, including (2) travelers, and among them.
He stated that the report indicated that (4) deaths were recorded in River Nile State, in addition to the recovery of (83) new cases.
Dr. Ibrahim pointed out that the spread of the Corona virus in the country requires an increase in the absorptive capacity of the isolation centers, saying that “the current situation confirms the growth of Corona injuries, and the isolation centers are working with all the capacity available.”
The undersecretary stressed that vaccination coverage has so far reached 8.2%, and pointed out that the World Health Organization expected Sudan to reach 20% by the end of the year.
“There are federal and state teams working according to directives. Global investigation and response to the Corona pandemic,” Dr. Haitham said.
He stressed that his ministry will take immediate measures, and said that in the event of a community spread of the disease, it will lead to closing the areas where cases appear to help prevent spread.
