The Minister of Finance in the coup government in Sudan painted a bleak picture of the Sudanese economy in 2022, as a result of foreign countries refraining from providing support to the government.

On Friday, the Minister of Finance in Sudan, Jibreel Ibrahim, announced there might be  a strong probability to lift subsidies on wheat and electricity in the 2022 budget.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Jibreel complained about Western countries and international financing institutions suspending grants and loans that were intended to support the democratic transition in Sudan, after the military coup on October 25th.

Western countries require a restoration of the civilian government before resuming their aid, which was disrupted by the military on October 25th.

“We are building a worst-case scenario and planning to rely on our internal resources,” Ibrahim said.

“We will not achieve the growth that we had planned.”

The military coup ended a series of economic growth achieved by the civilian government, which included reducing the inflation rate and normalizing relations with international financial institutions.
