Al-Shibli given the death penalty for role in Ubayyid massacre

Last Monday, the Appeals Court in al-Ubayyid annulled the decision of the trial court to refer the accused’s file to the Child Court to sign the appropriate measure.

The al-Ubayyid Court in central Sudan ruled for the death sentence against the accused, Mohamed Ahmed Abdullah Huna – known as Al-Shibli— a member of the Rapid Support Forces accused of killing school students in what became known as the “al-Ubayyid martyrs massacre.”

The court referred the Al-Shibli’s report to the Children’s Court in in the state for having not reached legal age when committing the crime.

Two other defendants were acquitted.

Last Monday, the Court of Appeal annulled the trial court’s decision to refer the accused’s file to the Child Court.

The conviction of the accused Al-Shibli was upheld under Articles 21/130 of the 1991 Criminal Code.

The previous ruling was replaced by a decision to return the papers to the General Criminal Court in al-Ubayyid to consider the penalty for the convict under Articles 21/130 of the 1991 Criminal Code.

This ruling indicated that Al-Shibli was not a child at the time of the crime on July 29, 2019.

The court has sentenced six RSF members convicted in the crime to “hanging by death.”

The al-Ubayyid massacre occurred in July 2019 when 5 demonstrators were killed, including 4 students.
