MOFA strikes deal to return deportees from Libya to Sudan

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced an agreement was struck with the International Organization for Migration to operate flights from Benghazi to Khartoum, exclusively for deportees and those wishing to return voluntarily from Libya to Sudan.

The Consul General of Sudan in Benghazi, capital of Libya, Abdullah Abakkar, stressed the need for fruitful cooperation and coordination regarding the service of the Sudanese immigrant.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Abakkar met at the headquarters of the United Nations Mission in the city, the Regional Director of the International Organization for Migration Federco Soda, regarding the arrangement for the deportation of Sudanese wishing to return voluntarily to country.

Voluntary Return

The consul called for the provision of aid and the voluntary return to Sudan to those who desired.

The two parties agreed that the Consulate General would extract  documents required for the returning Sudanese, to help operate flights from Benghazi to Khartoum exclusively for the deportees and those wishing to return voluntarily, and to provide assistance to needy families through the heads of the communities directly.

The parties also agreed on monitoring the treatment of the deportees.

The two sides agreed on continuous communication to urgently address all problems and issues that fall within the framework of the organization’s tasks.

Voluntary Deportation

The International Organization for Migration had sponsored the deportation of more than 2,200 Sudanese citizens from Libya before the end of the year 2021.

The deportation program is scheduled to continue throughout this year also, according to the assurances of the resident representative of the International Organization for Migration in Libya Federico Soda, and the Chargé d’Affairs of the Sudanese Embassy in Libya.

The Sudanese embassy in Libya announced that it would also temporarily help accommodate the Sudanese nationals wishing to return until their deportation to Sudan, through voluntary return trips organized by the International Organization for Migration in coordination with the embassy and the relevant Sudanese authorities.
