East Sudan Conference starts today, Sunday

Political Process Spokesman says conference scheduled to continue up to Wednesday February 15

Khartoum: Altaghyeer

The Spokesman of the Sudan’s Political Process, Khalid Omer Yousif, has stated that preparations have been completed for launching the East Sudan conference, Sunday.

The conference will discuss one of the postponed questions in the Political Framework Agreement, signed last December.

Yousif told the Sudan News Agency on Saturday that the final phase of the political process has been progressing satisfactorily and that the sessions of the road map conference for political and security stability and sustainable development in the East Sudan will start evening Sunday.

Some of the East Sudan groups have declined to participate in the conference including two factions of the Higher Council for the Beja Tribe’s Chieftains.

The Council said in a statement that any initiative by signatories to the Framework Agreement or others seeking the resolution of the region crisis should stipulate cancelation of the measures proposed by the Juba Peace Agreement, and should confirm that the talks shall be inclusive, with international guarantees for implementation of the agreement and of tribal reconciliation.

The Council rejects the Juba Peace Agreement’s East track on the ground that some main tribal components were excluded from the agreement.
