King Charles visits Sudanese community in London

The UK renews support to a political process which can bring peace and stability for the people of Darfur

Khartoum: Altaghyeer

King Charles lll visited members of the Sudanese community in London at an event marking 20 years since the start of the Darfur conflict.

The deposed regime of Omer Al Bashir has waged a war against Darfur’s people in which war crimes and genocide have been committed. Al Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for these crimes.

A statement issued by the UK embassy in Khartoum said “The King’s visit came in response to an invitation extended to His Majesty by one of the survivors of the conflict. His Majesty, The King, listened to the  testimonies of survivors and learned about the lives of the Sudanese community in the UK”.

The statement further said “the Kingdom continues steadfastly to support a political process which can bring peace and stability for the people of Darfur. Meanwhile, we remain committed to helping Darfuris directly through the provision of humanitarian aid as well as  by funding peacebuilding and transitional justice programmes”.

It is to be noted that communal conflicts have recently emerged in Darfur in an alarming way as Darfur’s movements signatories to Juba peace agreement neglected realizing its goals and, in liu of that, sought sidelining with the military’s quest for power and wealth.
