About 30 thousand civilians flee from western Darfur into Chad

Despite the signing, two years ago, of a peace agreement the security situation in Darfur continues deterioration.

Khartoum: Altaghyeer

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Sudan office, said six people were killed, eight injured and up to 30,000 fled across the border into neighbouring Chad during violence that erupted recently in Tandulti, West Darfur State.

The inter-communal violence has erupted as a result of killing and ensuing retaliation of the murder of persons from the two sides.

OCHA said most of those who fled into Chad were women, children, and elderly.

About 59 homes were looted and burned down during the fighting.

Joint security forces were deployed to the area to contain the situation. The Governor (Wali) of West Darfur and the state security committee visited Tandulti to try to de-escalate the situation.

Quoting local sources, OCHA said the security situation in Tandulti remains tense.
