Sudan: UNITAMS calls for investigation into death threat against Volker Perthes

The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) expressed deep concern over a video circulating in the media featuring a man requesting a fatwa (a religious legal opinion) to allow him to assassinate the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of UNITAMS, Mr. Volker Perthes.

The menacing statement occurred on the sideline of a press conference held by Sudan People Call on Monday in Khartoum in the presence of the Bija Tribal leader Mohammed Al Amin Tirik and the former Minister of Health, all supporters of the deposed regime and the coup authorities.

UNITAMS Spokesperson May Yagoub said in statement on Tuesday “While we welcome the voices condemning this video and its content, we call on the Sudanese authorities to initiate legal measures and ensure a proper investigation.”

She added that ‘”the language of incitement and violence will only deepen divisions on the ground, but it will not deter the mission from carrying out its duties.”

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of UNITAMS to support the people of Sudan in achieving the political transition to democratic rule as outlined in its mandate issued by the United Nations Security Council.

Meanwhile, the Sudan People Call denied any relationship with the man who had asked for the fatwa. It said in statement on Tuesday that the man was one of the persons who attended the press conference and expressed his personal opinion after the end of the conference.
