Sudan: call for an urgent meeting by political forces to defuse tension between Army and RSF

The President of the Umma Party has invited political forces, armed movements, civil forces, army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leaders for a meeting to be held on Friday to discuss escalation of tension between the army and RSF.

A press release by office of Fadl Allah Burma Nasir, President of the Umma Party, has described the security situation in the country as being on the verge of collapse therefore extraordinary measures are required to deal with it.

The meeting was previously slated for Thursday but in a later development Nasir said it was agreed to hold it on Friday to allow for contacts with the military sides through an ad hoc committee.

“Statements by the army and RSF, mobilization, crude language and military movements have reached the stage preceding firing the first shot, Allah forbid” the release said.

Nasir called for freezing every military measures and that all political forces should refrain from issuing statements in support of any of the two parties.

He added that the current situation requires out of the box thinking as things are developing in a way that will dump all past political mechanisms and processes taken to bring the country back on the track of civilian rule.

RSF deployment

Tension has been rising of recently between the Army and the RSF. It reached its peak following deployment of RSF troops in Alshamalia, northern Sudan, near Meroe airport adjacent to an army base.

The Army issued statement early Thursday refuting statements by the RSF that they deployed their troops upon consent of the Sudanese Armed Forces.

The army statement said the Sudanese armed forces have the duty to ring the alarm bell as the country was going through a historic and dangerous turning point. “This situation was further exacerbated by the RSF’s leadership’s mobilization of troops and their deployment inside the capital and some urban areas.'”

The RSF were initially armed militia used by the deposed regime in Darfur war. The force was first affiliated to the Security and Intelligence Service and then it was made a separate forces in 2017 and attached directly to the President. Its current commander is General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo (Hemedti), the Deputy President of the coup Sovereign Council.
