Sudan’s neighboring countries summit calls for immediate full ceasefire

The final communique of the summit of the Sudan’s neighboring countries, which was held in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Thursday, expressed concern for the continuation of military operations and deterioration of security and humanitarian situations in Sudan.

The summit was held to discuss how to resolve the Sudan crisis.

The summit final communique called on the belligerent parties to stop escalation of the conflict and agree on immediate and full halt of the military operations to avert killing of the innocent Sudanese civilians and destruction of their properties.

The summit was attended by the heads of state and government of Central Africa, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Libya and South Sudan, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Secretary General of the Arab League.

The participants assured full respect of the Sudan’s sovereignty, integrity and safety of its territories. The summit further called for treating the ongoing conflict as an internal affair underlying that external parties should not interfere in the crisis on a way that would obstruct efforts of its solution or prolong it.

The summit also stressed need for avoiding disintegration of the Sudanese state and spread of choas which will have grave consequences on the security and stability of the neighboring countries.

The summit called for provision of humanitarian assistance and facilitation of its arrival across the neighbouring countries.

The participants underlied the need for a political solution for the ongoing conflict and comprehensive dialogue for the Sudanese parties.

They also agreed to establish a ministerial mechanism on the level of foreign ministers of the neighboring countries to work out practical solutions for the Sudanese crisis. The mechanism will hold its first meeting in Chad.
