Sudan: FFC leading figure accuses African mediator Lebatt of contacting members of deposed regime

The leading figure in the pro-demogracy political alliance the ‘Forces for Freedom and Change’, Salah Manaa, said the African Union mediator Mohamed al-Hacen Lebatt has made contacts with followers of the defunct regime in Sudan to bypass the Civilian Front for Ending the War and Restoring Democracy.

Khartoum: Altaghyeer

Manaa said in a tweet on Monday that Lebatt contacted followers of the deposed regime and supporters of the 2021 coup, led by the Sudanese army general Abdul Fatah Al Burhan, seeking to undermine the Civilian Front for Ending the War and Restoring Democracy.

Lebatt is a Mauritanian diplomat who assumed a number of high portfolios in his country including Foreign Minister 1997-1998. He is currently African Union Commission Chairperson’s principal strategic adviser. He served as AU Special Envoy to Sudan following the overthrowing of Omer Albashir by the popular revolution of December 2018.

Manna disclosed that Lebatt held a meeting on August 5 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, describing it as a ‘failure’.

“There is no way to end the war except through establishment of a broad civilian front that represents Sudan’s diversity, with the exclusion of the followers of the deposed regime”, he added.
