The agricultural season in many Sudanese states is facing serious challenges as a result of the war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted in April 15th, a matter that threatens to exacerbate poverty impacts and food crisis.

The Arab League concluded in Cairo, Egypt, the 112th ordinary session of its Economic and Social Council on Thursday. The Sudan delegation to the meetings was led by the Planning Undersecretary at the Ministry of Finance Dr. Mohamed Bashar.

The meetings discussed, among other issues, the Arab food security and the Arab League initiative for safeguarding the agricultural season in Sudan in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development taking into considerations the conditions created by the war situation in the country.

Farmers at the Gazera Scheme, the largest irrigated agricultural project in the Sudan, have been warning against failure of the summer season’s crops including cotton, sorghum and ground nuts citing the accumulation of challenges that impact the agricultural operations including irrigation, fertilizers and other vital inputs.

A source told Altaghyeer that the situation in the Scheme is serious indeed, citing the difficulties created by the war situation top of which lack of government funding, monitoring and security concerns. The private sector’s companies which work in cleaning the irrigation canals, a major process in this irrigated scheme, have also been unable to do business this season so far.
