Sudan: Over 60 sexual violence cases reported in Darfur

Since eruption of conflict in mid-April, more than 60 sexual violence cases against women were reported in Darfur region, said member of Darfur Defenders Alliance, Awatif Ahmed Ishaq.

Khartoum: Altaghyeer

“Victims of sexual violence usually do not speak out about their ordeal because the society considers the issue a stigma besides the shock and psychosocial trauma the victims suffer”, Ishaq told Radio Tamazuj.

She said the role of the Darfur Defenders Alliance is to train defenders of human rights on how to handle gender-based violence, raise awareness of the society and raise funds for providing medical and psychosocial care for the victims.

Ishaq said the Frontline Defenders Organisation has trained a group of members of Darfur Defenders Alliance.

She called on the warring parties to stop sexual and verbal violence against women and to find a radical solution for the Sudan crisis through balanced development of all parts of the country.
