The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) facilitated 44 trucks with relief supplies to Kordofan and Darfur on Wednesday.

Briefing journalists Thursday, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said that prior to this “the movement of supplies was delayed for six consecutive weeks due to insecurity.”

Haq added, “The convoy is transporting supplies from the UN Refugee Agency, the World Food Programme and UNICEF.”

Regarding the health situation in the country, the spokesperson noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) says that more than 1,400 suspected cases of cholera and 64 associated deaths have been reported in Sudan since a cholera outbreak was declared late last month.

Haq concluded, “Humanitarian agencies have scaled up their response to the outbreak which comes as Sudan’s health care system is stretched to its limits.”

UNICEF and WHO warned on Wednesday that at least 10,000 children under 5 years of age may die by the end of 2023 due to the increase in food insecurity, and disruptions to essential services since conflict broke out in Sudan.
