Sudanese organisation documents over 200 cases of sexual violence
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militias have raped and abused thousands of women and girls besides sexual assault crimes committed by the multiple armies within the atmosphere of militarization and terrorism in which the Sudanese people, particularly women, live, says an activist.
Kampala, Altaghyeer: Sara Taj Alsir
Regional Director of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network, Hala al-Karib, revealed that more than 200 sexual violence cases have been documented in Sudan untill end of January.
“It is important to notice that these figures on sexual violence are but the tip of the iceberg”, she told Altaghyeer. The Rapid Support Forces militias have raped and abused thousands of women and girls besides sexual assault crimes committed by the multiple armies within the atmosphere of militarization and terrorism in which the Sudanese people, particularly women, live, she added.
Al-Karib explained that the 200 documented cases of sexual violence did not include the violations committed in al-Gezira State which was unreachable due to communications blackout. They also did not include North Darfur and West Darfur States, except for women who managed to leave the RSF controlled areas, she said.
The rape cases perpetrated in al-Gineina and Nyala cities of Darfur also were not covered in this statistics, she said.
Al-Karib lamented, on the International Women’s Day, that women are paying for historic mistakes made by military and civil elites including the policy of impunity.
Member of Emergency Lawyers, Rihab Mubark, disclosed to Altaghyeer that 20 of the RSF’s rape survivors have carried out legal abortion.
Some 370 rape victims have requested treatment protocol, she said.
She added that 56 women were raped in Darfur two months ago and 25 others in Balail village of South Darfur have been kidnapped by the RSF.
