Altaghyeer: Agencies

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned Saturday that half of Sudan’s population is in dire need of humanitarian aid.

The UN official said on his X account that the health needs required by Sudan are very large, with about 3.4 million children suffering from malnutrition.

Ghebreyesus noted that Sudan’s growing needs “are not receiving sufficient international attention,” as millions of people, especially in Darfur state, are deprived of direct humanitarian assistance.

He appealed to all parties to provide safe access for international assistance and agencies to all conflict-affected areas, so that WHO and its partners can protect all groups.

According to UN figures, 14,600 Sudanese citizens died, 26,000 wounded, nearly 8 million were displaced during the war which broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in April 2023.

Some 25 million people, almost half the population, need assistance, and nearly 18 million Sudanese are severely food insecure, of whom 5 million face hunger.
