The United States Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello left Washington on May 11 to Uganda, Kenya, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia to meet with key regional partners.

Perriello was appointed to the role last February to coordinate the U.S. policy on Sudan and advance our efforts to end the hostilities, secure unhindered humanitarian access and support the Sudanese people to realize their aspirations for freedom, peace, and justice.

The visit’s aim is “to advance efforts to end the Sudan conflict and avert further mass atrocities, address the immediate and dire humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people, and map a path toward a transition to a civilian-led democratic government”, said the US State Department in a press statement.

The Special Envoy will meet with partner governments to coordinate diplomatic efforts to resume negotiations, build pressure needed to protect civilians and silence the guns, and facilitate a transition to a civilian-led democratic government, the statement said.

Perriello will also meet with a broad range of Sudanese civilians, including civil society, resistance committees, local response networks, women, youth, grassroots organizations, and other parties to hear their views on how to bolster efforts to end the conflict in Sudan.
