The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has recaptured Jebel Moya ‘Mount Moya’ region of Sinnar State in south central Sudan from the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after fierce fighting.

The RSF launched on Monday a surprise attack on the SAF forward defenses in the region but the latter managed to regain its lost positions after a 7-hour battle.

The RSF has retreated to Fungoga village near Jebel Moya ‘Moya mountain’, sources told Altaghyeer.

The RSF attacked the region with the intention of cutting the road linking Sinnar State to the White Nile State and thus separating Kordofan region, which is neighboring the White Nile State, from the east Sudan where Port Sudan, the de facto seat of SAF-led government, is situated, the sources said.

The SAF has also recaptured Sinnar Sugar Factory as a video circulated across social media showed soldiers inside the factory.

An informed source expected the RSF to reattack Jebel Moya during the coming days before the rainy season makes the roads impassable.

Jebel Moya is a granite massif that rises from the Gezira Plain in Central Sudan and halfway between Sinnar on the Blue Nile and Rabak on the White Nile.

It is an archaeological site; one of the largest pastoralist cemeteries in Africa with over 3,000 burials excavated thus far.
