Highly contagious skin disease spreads in northern Sudan

A highly contagious skin infection appeared in al-Shamalia State in the far northern part of Sudan, the Health Ministry said, explaining that the disease is likely caused by deteriorated environmental conditions crested by torrential rains and floods.

Some 260 cases of a highly contagious skin infection appeared in al-Shamalia State in the far northern part of Sudan, the State’s Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The Ministry explained that the symptoms of the disease include rash on the face, back, hands or feet in simple cases while in severe cases it is accompanied by fever, skin ulcers, and secretions.

The disease is transmitted by direct contact with the affected persons or using their belongings.

The disease is likely one of the epidemics that hit parts of the country due to the current torrential rains and floods.

Some 102 new cases of cholera have been reported in Sudan increasing the total to 1223 including 48 deaths, the federal Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

The Ministry said the disease spread in five Sudanese states including Kasala and Gedaref in the east part of the country, al-Gezira and Khartoum in the center and Nahr al-Neel (River Nile) in the northern part.
