Sudanese provincial airport operated for humanitarian purposes

 

The airport will help deliver humanitarian assistance to war-affected displaced people and floods victims, an official says.

The Sudanese government has agreed to operate Dongola Airport in north Sudan for humanitarian purposes, the Sudan News Agency reported on Tuesday.

A delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP) paid a visit to al-Shamalia State in north Sudan on Tuesday to inspect the Airport and assess its operational capacities, the Agency said.

They met with the State’s acting Governor, Abdeen Awadallah, in the presence of the Minister for Infrastructure and Urban Development, Mohamed Sidahmed, and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Abdul Rahman Khairi.

The delegation got assured that the airport possess all necessary components to discharge humanitarian operations.

The Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, Abdul Rahman Khairi, stressed that the airport will help in delivering humanitarian assistance to war-affected displaced people as well as those affected by the recent rains and floods in the State.

Sudan is witnessing catastrophic humanitarian situations due to escalation of the war between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces which forced hundreds of thousands people to flee their homes.
