World Union of Poets named Mohamed al-Mekki Ibrahim Sudan’s Poet of the Year
A jury of five prominent cultural figures selected Mohamed al-Mekkki Ibrahim as the Sudan’s Poet of the Year from among five contesters.

The Sudanese renowned poet Mohamed al-Mekki Ibrahim has been named by the World Union of Poets as Sudan’s Poet of the Year 2024.
Born in 1939, al-Mekki is an iconic figure in the Sudanese cultural scene as a poet, writer, critic, translator, political analyst and activist.
His publications include four collections in poetry, several books and hundreds of essays.
Al-Mekki was a career diplomat, he holds a B.A. in law from Khartoum
University and an M.A. in political science from the Sorbonne, France.
He has won the Sudan’s Poet of the Year award from among five contestants.
The jury decided, after consultation with the President of the World Union of Poets Abdul Rahman al-Kharshami, to nominate al-Mekki also for the Arab Poet of the Year competition.
The Award jury was chaired by Professor Mohamed Al-Mahdi Bushara, a professor at the University of Khartoum, a critic and researcher with more than ten books on literary criticism. He is also a member of the board of trustees of al-Tayeb Saleh International Award for Creative Writing and a founding member of the Sudanese Writers’ Union.
The jury members include 1- Prof. al-Sideeq Omar al-Sadiq, director of Abdallah Al-Tayeb Institute for Arabic Language and director of Khartoum Poetry House, professor of Arabic literature and criticism at the University of Khartoum, 2- Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Rahman Awad Al-Karim Al-Haboub who taught at a number of Sudanese and Saudi universities, a writer, critic, and researcher in the literary, cultural and social fields, 3- Dr. Lemya Shammat; a university professor, a member of the Sudanese Writers’ Union and a member of many Sudanese cultueal awards juries, and 4- Dr. Salwa Osman Ahmed, dean of the Faculty of Arts at al-Nilain University (Khartoum, Sudan).
