Residents of al-Hilalia, Roufaa, Tumbool and Abu Goota towns and many villages in al-Gezira State are suffering severely under a 22 day siege imposed by the paramilitary RSF who are retaliating for the defection of a top leader hailing from the State, to join the army.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) siege of al-Hilalia town in al-Gezira State, centeral Sudan, has led to the killing of 527 civilians up to Sunday 17 October, a local civil organisation reported.

Al-Gezira Congress on Monday quoted sources in the city as saying that the dead in al-Hilalia included 53 children and 293 women.

Residents of al-Hilalia, Roufaa, Tumbool and Abu Goota towns and many villages in al-Gezira State are suffering severely under a 22 day siege imposed by the paramilitary RSF in retaliation for the defection of its top leader in the State, Abu Aagla Kaikl, who hailed from this region.

Tens of thousands of the residents have fled to relatively safe areas in north and east Sudan while those who were unable to leave are undergoing untold adverse and tragic conditions amid RSF atrocities, lack of food and water and outbreaks of diseases including what is described by some sources as cholera and sometimes food poisoning.

The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary RSF, which erupted in April last year in the capital Khartoum and spread later to wider areas in Darfur, Kordofan, al-Gezira and Sinnar States, has killed thousands of civilians and caused the world’s worst displacement crisis.
