Police apprehends foreigners-led network specialised in theft of Sudanese antiquities

Sudanese Police Force has apprehended a foreigners-led criminal network specialised in antiquities theft, drugs and psychotropic substances trade.

Sudanese Police Force has apprehended in Nahr al-Neel (River Nile) State a foreigners-led criminal network specialised in antiquities theft, drugs and psychotropic substances trade.

The Police ambushed the gang after tracking it’s movements for some time.

Raiding two of the gang’s hideouts in Atabra city, Nahr al-Neel State, the Police arrested ten foreigners and captured many rare antiquities stolen from Khartoum and South Darfur States prepared for smuggling, the Police Media Office said.

The stolen artifacts include two statues decorated with historical inscriptions, 7 copper jugs of different sizes, an ancient dagger and a pan.

Huge amounts of local and foreign currencies were also found with the gang, the Police Media Office said, adding that photos and videos of diamond and golden jewellery and weapons were also found in their phones displayed for sale.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has facilitated looting of these artifacts with the aim of destabilising security and obliterating the country’s cultural identity, the Office said.

The accused have suspicious relations with the RSF and have a history of drug trafficking and other crimes, Director of Central Criminal Investigations, Major. General Abdul Kareem Hamatu, said.
