Sudanese doctor Safa Ali and activist Hala al-Carib have been selected within the BBC list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2024.
Safa Ali is a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology.
When heavy fighting broke out near her hospital in Sudan last year, Safa Ali refused to leave with her colleagues, despite the constant shelling.
“She helped evacuate volunteer staff and pregnant women to a safer locations, amid violent clashes between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces”, the BBC said.
Currently at al-Saudi Maternity Hospital, Safa Ali performs Caesarean sections and treats women’s health issues under the challenges posed by ongoing conflict.
Sometimes she has to visit pregnant women in their homes when they were not able to come to the hospital for follow-up.
When her family decided to leave the Sudan she insisted to stay and carry on her humanitarian mission.
Hala al-Karib is a prominent activist against sexual violence in war.
As regional director of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), al-karib leads programmes that spotlight gender-based violence in the wider region.
Since war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, SIHA has been tracking conflict-related sexual violence, providing support to women and girls.
Al-Karib has significantly contributed to promotion of gender justice, advocating women rights and pushing for realization of peace, the BBC said.
