Egypt and the United Kingdom (UK) reiterated their shared belief in the urgent need to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Sudan which has led to widespread displacement and a dire humanitarian crisis.
The two countries held consultations on African Affairs focused primarily on the situation in Sudan.
The consultations also covered key topics impacting the African continent, including regional challenges in the Horn of Africa and Sahel and means of cooperation between the two countries to promote security and stability in these regions, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
Both Egypt and the UK reaffirmed their support for the Federal Government of Somalia and reiterated their commitment to Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
They discussed the ongoing efforts to finalize the arrangements for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), and agreed that the African Union and Somalia should continue their efforts to secure funding for the mission’s operations.
The consultations came amid escalating crises in Africa particularly the Sudan war which erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on 15 April 2023.
The Egyptian FM, Badr Abdel Aaty, visited Sudan last Tuesday for the first time since eruption of the Sudan’s conflict on 15 April 2023 to affirm Egypt’s solidarity with Sudan and its efforts to facilitate resumption of its activities within the African Union.
Three weeks ago, the UK sponsored a Security Council draft resolution calling on the Sudan’s warring parties to agree a national ceasefire but Russia vetoed the resolution.
